Short question: Have you accepted the registry setting which you where
asked at startup or have you canceled that and tried search and find.
I had a similar problem with jdk1.2.2 (sun) and win98.
The installer found a registry setting pointing to
C:/Programme/jdk1.2.2/java instead of C:/Programme/jdk1.2.2/bib/java.exe
Try to uninstall and just install again cancel the registry guess and
try search and find (which comes next and reports the true location of
java)
After all this could be wrong but it was right for me.
