I often see load averages of 8 or so. When I do a site insert, I usually
hit 18-20, and I've seen it as high as 27. (The hard drive activity is
continuous during a site insert, and I can utterly *forget* about playing
MP3/Ogg files over NFS during this period.)

How much RAM? (Probably more than mine; I have a Celeron 400 with 64 MB.)
I'm also running Debian + j2sdk.3, but it's woody, and a CVS version
of Freenet.
