I might comment that certainly for gentoo, and most likely for other distros
as well, you would often do well to search your distro bugzilla before
going to a higher-level list.  Often things like init.d scripts are
tailored by the distro since they often care where all the files got
installed.

If your distro is fairly popular like debian/gentoo/fedora/whatever you will
probably find a solution to your problems already posted.  Or at the very
least you'll find more knowledgable responses, since a non-debian user
wouldn't realize that the directories were all remapped two days before,
etc...
