I can understand the need to allow people who use Freenet, if they
desire, to keep their nodes off any node lists. This is perfectly
understandable.
However, I understand that for new users who do not know anyone who runs
a freenet node, the client downloads a list of nodes to make initial
contact with, thus allowing people who do not know anyone with a node to
still be able to connect (please correct me if I am wrong).
I believe that for those who do not wish their node to be placed on a
list for use an initial contact point to new nodes joining the network,
they should be able to do so by enabling an option. This allows new
users who do not know of any existing nodes to still be able to use the
network and get a list of nodes to connect to, but also allows people
who need to keep their node off any lists to do so as well.
I do not believe that Freenet should be turned into strictly an
invitation only network. For people who only want to connect to nodes
run by people they know, and not have their node on any lists, fine,
they should be able to do so. But for the people who dont know anyone
who uses Freenet, they should still be able to enjoy the privacy,
anonymity and information that that Freenet provides. I certianly do not
know any other people who run a freenet node to who I can connect to. I
think that requiring people to know other people who already have
running nodes would make the difficulty of using Freenet so great that
it will make it unuseable for a large number of users and prevent many
users from starting a node at all, and would damage Freenets usability.
Please, certianly I think it is a good idea to allow users to keep their
nodes off lists if they want and use exclusively nodes run by people
they know, but this should be optional, since many do not have this
luxury of knowing existing nodes, and would no longer be able to connect
to Freenet at all. It would turn Freenet into essentially a invitation
only network, and would make it inaccessible to a large number of
people, hardly the philosophy I thought Freenet would follow, which is
to bring anonymous, private communications to all.
