You could always change your nodename to "I'll be back" or something before you leave, then people connected at that time can see that you are just away temporarily. That's what I was planning to do.

A lot of people drop nodes which have been idle for a while, on the
assumption that they were newbies who have uninstalled. So yes, it
probably would lose many of its connections.
