I have now "solved" the problem by removing the datastore. I can now run the node again, but I'm afraid whatever bug caused this in the first place is most likely still there and I might well run into the same or similar problems in the future when the store/cache grows again.
For the time being, I'm keeping my old store (actually just the cache dir) around somewhere else in the hope that someone will come up with a real solution allowing me to keep using my old store.
