I have the same familiar Windows problem when trying to start Freenet.

"Service did not respond to signal"

1) Windows XP 32bit SP3

2)Java 6.0.200.2

3) LocalService has write permissions

4) Event viewer states that: "Freenet background service failed to
start due to the
following error: the service did not respond to the start or
control request in a
timely fashion. Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the
Freenet background
     service to connect.

5) I cannot connect to http://127.0.0.1:8888

Did you try starting it manually with the jars? I think the wiki page says how to do this?

Thank you for your help in resolving this issue.

I am running freenet on windowsxp 64-bit system. Since I like to control what services start, after I installed freenet, I changed the freenet daemon service to manual start.(right-click My Computer/manage/services and look for freenet service, then change the startup type from automatic to manual. Now you will have to manually start freenet.
Make sure you run freenet 24/7 if you want to get good results.)
Then I start freenet using either the freenet "bunny" in my system tray or use the start.exe in the /freenet/bin directory.

I often get the same error
"...the service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting ...yada yada yada..service to connect."
BUT, when I check, my system resources show that the freenet java process IS running and the error message was false,(perhaps a longer timeout period needed?)
