Because it sometimes works better, I start Freenet using 'services.msc'.
Trying that, I noticed name and location of 'freenetwrapper.exe' as well as the location of 'wrapper.conf' have changed but not the registry key pointing to them.

[I repaired that using hardlinks, with success]

I don't get it. If this was true Freenet would not start at all. Maybe you've
just corrupted your own system?

Modern installs don't use a service anyway, they auto-start on login with a
start menu item or similar.

No, hardlinks are an xp system feature that don't corrupt anything. The Freenet service is there on the list, and it relied on a no longer existing file name and on no longer valid file locations.

If I start Freenet using the start menu, the service indeed stays not started. Can I conclude the Freenet wrapper no longer runs as a service, meaning that this service can be removed?
