I think it works very well. Others might disagree with me after some 
frustrating experiences related here on the list. How well it works 
depends on system settings to insure FileMaker knows what your 
default email client is. This is more or less easy depending on the 
email program and system you use, apparently.

I have seen any one of several built-in fields used for that - 
affiliations, issues2, action preferences. And of course if you have 
FileMaker you can add your own flags. If you are asking specifically 
if you can mark several options in a given field, the answer is also 
yes, you can format a field with a value list and check boxes.

Again, just add the fields you want to track. You can sort by any 
field in the file.
