I've seen Filemaker peer-to-peer crash a million times. Sometimes with
unrecoverable databases.
I've seen Filemaker Server crash exactly once, and the situation was
extremely atypical; it wouldn't happen to eBase.
If a client crashes and Server does not (and it won't), the client crash has
zero effect on the databases. Other clients continue to be serviced as
normal.
Startup will be much, much faster. FM server is multi-threaded, FM
peer-to-peer is not.
FM Server does not handle any web functionality. That's handled by a
client, so you don't get anything extra with FM server.
FM Server automates backups to local or remote drives, on any hourly, daily
or weekly schedule you may choose, to any mounted drive you choose. No more
goofy shut-down-the-database-and-make-a-copy-onto-zip stuff.
FM Server writes a usage and error log - who opened what, when, who closed
what, when, success or failure of backups, etc.
FM Server has administration tools which allow you to see at a glance who's
logged in to which databases, allows you to force the closure of single or
multiple databases, kick out users, etc.
Filemaker will give away server copies to non-profits. The turnaround time
from initial request to approval is something like 3 months however.
