Valerie,

Assuming you're using a windows-based PC, first obtain a copy of WinZip from somewhere like shareware.com (search the site for WinZip, then download).  WinZip is shareware that allows for a certain period of free use.

Install this on your computer by double-clicking the download. When you do, I recommend choosing the 'WinZip Classic' option over the 'Wizard' option.

Once installed, create a new WinZip file on your computer by right-clicking in a blank space in a folder, and then choosing New > WinZip file.  Create this zip file in a folder other than your ebase folder.

Rename this file to be something like 20010402_ebase.zip. (I _always_ name backups by the date of the backup)

Double click the file to open it.  Click 'I agree'.  You'll now have a WinZip window open.  Eventually, this will show the files you have compressed and put into the file, but for now it should be empty.

If other people where you work use ebase over a network, make sure they have quit ebase.  Quit ebase on its home machine as well (or on its _only_ machine if only used on one machine).

Open up the ebase folder.  It'll have a couple dozen files, plus a few folders.

Select all of the items in the ebase folder, including both the files and the subfolders

Drag the items onto the currently-open WinZip window.

You'll get a 'DRAG & DROP' window.  Make sure that both 'RECURSE FOLDERS' and 'SAVE EXTRA FOLDER INFO' are checked in the 'Folders' box.  Click ADD.

Don't disturb WinZip while it's archiving the data.  When it's done, you'll se a green light at the lower right corner of the WinZip window.  At this time you'll also see a list of archived files in the WinZip window.  You can quit WinZip when this green light appears.

Lastly, move a copy of your new archive of ebase data onto a zipdisk, CD, or other portable medium and store it off site.

I find that ebase data is compressed to about 25% its original size when zipped.  WinZip's a lifesaver.
