*** Backing up ebase on CD ***

Susan,

Open Applications?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Based on your short description, it sounds like ebase is still open when
you attempt to back it up.  This ocurs with many application data files if
the file is 'locked' by the application as 'in use'.  This prevents other
software from making changes or in your case, gain access to the file for
exclusive backup.
Ensure ebase is closed and the FileMaker Pro is also closed before running
your backup.
I have also experienced this problem on Windows NT networks.  FileMaker
seems to lock access to a file and I must go in and reset the access.
CD-Burner Issues
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In regards to backing up ebase to cd-rom. I recommend that you reboot your
system before creation of a data CD. I also recommend that all
applications be closed. This should also include all those programs that
start up with windows and place an icon on the task bar of windows, next to
the clock. These programs can interfere with the CD writer operation and
should be closed or disabled.

Note: Look at any NEW upgrades or additions that may have been added to the
system and are interfering with the CD software or driver.

In regards to failures with your HP-CDRW's. Follow the above
recommendations. I have also had similar experiences with HP CDR's. Have
created a lot of frisbees. Ensure the drive is clean and your CDRW's are
free of dust and finger prints.

How are you using the CD Writer?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Finally,  check the way that you are creating the CD's.  Are you simply
using the CDR as a drive you copy to and from or are you running a backup
program and using the CD as the backup medium.  Either methods can cause
problems.  In creations of a CD, the writing of data to the CD is called a
'Session'.  A session comes in three flavors; close cd after session, leave
cd open after session, close and lock cd after session.  In your case, I
recommend that the session be left open after the session.
If you are using the CD-R as virtual 650 Mb hard drive to copy to and from,
I would look at the software is use and or the HP CD Driver software.
I recommend that you check that you have the latest software drivers for
the drive and that you are using the latest version of your software.  If
problems exist with either the hardware or software, this is usually
addressed through software updates and driver updates.
Hope this helps...
