Dave,
I concur, after looking at the field definitions, that although a value is
auto-entered, it ought to be modifiable. We haven't yet been able to narrow
down the set(s) of circumstances under which this occurs. Seems pretty
random at this point.
Has anyone else noticed and/or dealt with this?

This field auto-enters a calculated value, and is not restricted for
data entry on the Payment entry screen. I can't see why it would not
allow data entry at any time. Can you reproduce this fault, or does
it happen unpredictably? Do you remember what you were doing at the
time it did not allow entry?
