Global fields in multi-user mode (whether with server or not) are *local*
globals.
If that seems counterintuitive, or downright oxymoron-ish (oxymoronic?), it
is. Basically changes to Global fields are global to the local user only. I
guess a coding analog would be public and private variables? Dunno. This
has its uses - in many cases you don't want to set a variable for one user
and have it affect another user's experience.
For the EBASE SIGNATURE field, well, it wasn't designed to be changed all
that often, right? So the fact that it can't be changed in a multi-user
environment isn't too bad if you know why it's happening.
The workaround you describe is the correct way of dealing with this issue.
If you needed to change the value of the signature field on a regular basis
there are other ways of dealing with it, but you chose the simplest and most
logical method for a single change.
