***** eBase in your Palm **** Hyland, The following is my comments and suggestions for your planned use of eBase on your Palm. To start out, you will require an upgrade for your FileMaker Pro 5 v1 to v3. The download is available at the Filemaker.com site. The you will have to acquire the FileMaker Mobile product. This must be installed on your MAC and then the database can be syncronized between your desktop and the Palm. System Requirements: Palm OS handheld device Hardware * Palm OS compatible handheld * 2 MB of storage minimum Software * Palm OS 3.1 or greater Windows Hardware * Intel-compatible computer Pentium 90 or greater * 32 MB of RAM * CD-ROM Drive * Hard Disk Drive * One available serial port or USB Software * Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0 (Service Pack 3), or 2000 * Palm Desktop 3.0.1 or greater * HotSync Manager 3.0.2 or greater * FileMaker Pro 5.0v3 (not included with FileMaker Mobile) FileMaker Pro 5.0 is ready for Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition. Although no formal certification exists for this operating system, software certified for Windows 98 (such as FileMaker Pro 5.0) is compatible with Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition. Macintosh Hardware * Power Macintosh computer * 32 MB of RAM * CD-ROM Drive * Hard Disk Drive * One available serial port or USB Software * Mac OS 8.1 to 9 * Palm Desktop 2.5 or greater * HotSync Manager 2.5 or greater * FileMaker Pro 5.0v3 (not included with FileMaker Mobile) The only reservations that I would have is that the Palm version, FileMaker Mobile creates it's own layouts to fit the Palm screen. This would certainly be an issue as eBase is currently designed to run all it's functions from push buttons. Here is a link to the FileMaker Mobile FAQ's. I believe this would means the layouts would have to be customized to access all the scripting in ebase. As an eBase consultant, I would love to assist you further. However, the Palm customization issues can be handled by any good FileMaker Pro or eBase consultant. This may also work to benefit other eBase users that may be considering this option. And I have yet to start using Ebase after taking two days of classes in Berkeley CA in January. All because I dread the process of exporting data from my current contact management system (ahem) which is in (don't laugh) Netscape 4.7. Before I embark on this journey, I want to know whether or not in the end I will have a sucessful combination of Palm and ebase. Will I be able to enter contact info on my Palm and then have it automatically entered into Filemaker/ebase? I do not absolutely love tinkering around with this stuff--I just want it to work. I'd certainly pay to work with someone who has already figured this out and would be willing to set it up for me--Oakland/Berkeley CA. Um.... I'll still need an email application, correct? I'm thinking Eudora. Or maybe I should go over to the dark side and start using Explorer--I only surf with Netscape becasue I use it for email. I'd love advice on which email apps work the best with ebase. I do have FM 5.0 v1 and about 8 years ago I was a whiz in FileMaker. But 8 years is a long time... Thanks for any and all of your advice!
