You're not missing anything. Thank you letters are viewed as the end
of a transaction, so no followup needed. Contact records are intended
to record a solicitation. You flag them with a source code, then flag
the responses (payment or action) with the same source code so you
can track the effectiveness of the solicitation. You respond to the
payment or action with a thank-you and that's the end of it.
On the Payment Entry screen is a field called Thank Date where you
can record the date a thank-you letter was sent.
