I've been through this same issue.  When ebase says "update," it doesn't
mean update the way FileMaker means update.  That's because when ebase was
created, FileMaker didn't have an update feature. You can't add information
to specific fields to exisiting records this way.

However, if your separate files contain information for the same unqie
individuals, and in the same order (i.e. the phone number for Bob Smith
appears in sequentially in the same place as Bob Smith's Address), you can
use the FileMaker update feature. It's a strikingly similar process to
importing through ebase, but you won't get to check your data before it's
moved into the database, once you import it, it's in there.  So be careful.

And, you should continue to use the ebase import functionality when
importing new records, so that they get unqie ebase IDs and all the proper
data is stored in the proper tables.
