I think you and your boss are going to have to define "impulse" and
"regular", but here are some ideas that might help.
At the bottom of the home screen the gray area with Fast Find Fields
contains renewal date, and last donation date, which gives you an
idea of how long it has been since a dues payment or contribution.
Click the Payments button, and you'll see a similar area with # of
memberships, and # of contributions. Presumably an impulse donor
would have only one of one or the other.
