The contacts flag area is not a single field with a value list and
check boxes. Each flag is a separate field. This was designed so you
could enter more than an X in each field - N, Y, for example. When
you clicked on the text and changed it you were probably changing
only the label, not the field.
To add more boxes, create new fields, and add them to the layout.
