I also lost the names file and followed Dave Shaw's recommendation to
recover using my last backup (which I do religiously every day for the very
reason you are writing. If backing up is difficult, figure out a way to do
it easily so you do do it every day that you make any changes.)

I moved the old damaged file on to another zip disc, renamed it. Then put my
backup file into my program files (PC, Windows). Be patient, it took me
about 10 minutes for ebase to open. It worked, thankfully.

Don't know if it will for you since you have tried a few other things first.
