The latter.  The fact that they EXIST makes your finds faster, but in order to make 
them accurate they need to be updated periodically.  How often depends on how many 
memberships you have and how many payments you enter on a daily basis.  Really, the 
only records that should need to be updated are those that have had a payment entered 
or have matriculated from one member status to another (based on date) since the last 
update.  Other than that, you also need to update all records when your fiscal year 
turns over.
