Turns out the affiliate has more than one database on the local. Alas...
after a crash, they launched the second copy (without the records) and
feared the worst. It took some time to determine, but we solved it. Phew,
potentially major problem averted! Lesson learned.

This sounds potentially serious. Please confirm what you are seeing
on the home page.

Look at the gray tools area on the left. At the top is the "rolodex"
icon. Under that you will see Records: and under that the number of
records in the file. If that says 2, someone has managed to delete
the balance of the records, and they are not recoverable. From here,
you'll need to restore from your most recent backup.

If the number of records shown under the rolodex is larger than 2,
under the number you will see Found: and under that the number 2. In
that case, the Find All button has been disabled somehow. Try this:
hold the Cmd key down (Ctrl on a Windows machine) and press the J.
This is the FileMaker "Find All" command and the found set will now
include all the records present in the file.
