It is, indeed, possible.  Here are the steps:

- Back up your entire ebase folder
- Find only those records that you want to replace
- Read the section in your Filemaker Help (it's more complete than the 
Filemaker manual) about "Replace with calculated result"
- Back up your entire ebase folder again
- Read the section in your Filemaker Help about the "Substitute 
Function".  Check out the examples.
- Back up your entire ebase folder again
- Replace the specific field with your calculated result.  If it didn't 
work right (it will do exactly what you tell it to), restore from your 
backup and start over.
