Here are a couple of suggestions.

Keep in mind that the Source Code is intended to uniquely identify a
particular solicitation, so you can find out how effective it was. Up
to six levels are available to code information about a particular
solicitation. Three are pretty obvious, and you have used them in the
obvious way, Month, Year, and Method of Delivery.

The other three are List/Audience and Unique Appeal, which you don't
mention, and Campaign, which you do show below as Origin Code.

Some of the items in your Campaign list sound like they really ought
to be in the Unique Appeal list. For example, I would have an item
called Membership in the campaign list, and Renewal 1, Renewal 2,
etc, in the unique appeal list. With both a campaign and unique
appeals relating to that campaign, you can run response analysis
reports on each renewal (to find out if it's worth sending the fourth
renewal, for example) and on the entire Membership campaign to find
out how you're doing this month, for example.

Any time you get a prospect list from someone, purchased, swapped, or
whatever, the solicitation you send to that list should have that
specific list identified in the List/Audience level of the source
code. You can then run a response analysis on source codes using that
list. You can also (which is one of your original questions) find out
how many people who received a solicitation from that list are
current members.

Most of the items in your Origin Code list could be viewed as items
for the List/Audience level. For example, you send a brochure or
other solicitation to those who inquire as a result of a print ad,
and code those solicitations with a source code containing PRA.

Another way of looking at those items, though, is as a solicitation.
You buy advertising or run a psa (solicit the public) and people
respond by calling you up and asking for information. Looking at them
that way, you would use some List/Audience code for the general
public.

Overall, you can make source codes do pretty much what you need.
Searching later for specific information is easier if you have detail
information in as many different levels of the source code as
possible.

>We are setting up all new source codes. We want as many options as possible
>for reporting. Example: We get new members from List A and two years later
>we
>want to see how many people from that list renewed their memberships. Below
>is a list of our source codes. I would like to know if we are going to be
>able to run reports for a certain mailing and find out how many members
>renewed from that mailing with say renewal letter number 1.
>I hope this makes sense. if not email me back and I will try to clarify
