For those interested, more information on the SirCam worm can be found at: http:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Note that this is a network-aware worm that can infect across a local area network to machines with writeable shared folders. I spent 6 hours fixing 5 machines in an office where only _one_ machine received an infected email. The symantec site (above) had some suggestions about limiting the number of writeable shared folders. We've converted most of our shared folders to 'read only' folders to protect machines from infection via the LAN. However, for those sharing ebase over a network, the ebase folder must be left as writeable (a.k.a. fully shared) to remaine usable for other users on the LAN. -- Eric Johnson Colorado Environmental Coalition -----Original Message----- From: Carl Paulsen [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, August 09, 2001 9:35 AM To: TechRocks Support Subject: [support] Possible Virus This message is being sent to the entire Rivers Council email address book. Apologies for duplicate postings as we have several active address books: Please beware that the NH Rivers Council's computer was recently infected with the SirCam "Worm" virus that sent out infected emails from our computer. Be careful opening any emails sent from any user at the domain <<nhrivers.org>> prior to 8/8/01, particularly if they contain attachments. Because of the way this particular virus works, we cannot predict what subject the email would have had. If in doubt, delete the email and contact our office to confirm whether or not the email was valid. Also, if you opened any such attachments, be sure to check your system carefully for the SirCam virus. Recently (within the last month or so) updated virus protection software should protect you. If infected, you may need to "disinfect" your computer. Contact your IT professional or our office for assistance. I am very sorry for any inconvenience caused by my **inattentiveness** and/or **laziness** in updating our virus protection software.
