i can't quite tell exactly what the problem is, but the result of the
problem is that i can no longer access ebase from other computers in the
officewhen it is already open once.
i think this happened as i was trouble-shooting another problem. while
fixing the other problem, i copied all ebase files (my ebase folder
actually) put them in another folder on my hard drive, and copied them back
to where the ebase folder was originally, rewriting them with the same files
i had just copied a few minutes ago. the other copy was then deleted.
i found out later that ebase couldn't be accessed from other computers when
it is already open once. the dialog box that pops up is "ebase.102 is
currently in use and could not be opened. the file is single user, or the
host could not be found on the network." i've checked the "set to
multi-user" box on the admin screen, and checked to see if key files are
clicked "multi-user" in the file >sharing... box in filemaker. i can't do
this for the ebase file itself (that option is grayed out), but i'm assuming
that's what the set to multi-user box on the admin screen 2 is for.
some clues:
previous to this problem, i've always opened ebase by clicking on ebase.102
(or the shortcut referencing it, i think). i don't remember seeing ebase.exe
in the files before, but it has suddenly appeared. i deleted it from my hard
drive (though i saved it somewhere else on the network). however, i did open
ebase using the exe to see what it would do (this might not have been
smart..?..) and the icons look different on my computer when ebase is
opened. i don't know enough of how ebase was set up originally on our system
to figure this out.
pretty much any input would be good because i've tried all that i know.
