so, i think i have the answer to this one, but i wanted to make sure.
i was working on the layout for a letter in ebase, in the payments file. i
copied text from a microsoft word document and pasted it into the ebase
layout, and was changing the fonts and it froze for a couple of seconds, and
then said that the file was damaged and that i needed to recover. before
shutting down and recovering, i opened it up once to see what it looked like
and the view payments screen was now using a random font that i don't think
i've ever used before (yes, i most likely should not have opened it at all,
i admit)
so the next thing i did, (foolishly, it seems) is listen to the computer and
recover the payments file--before reading up on database crashes in this
support listserve that say "DO NOT RECOVER, EVER, AT ALL, etc etc etc"...
so, it was only the payments file that i recovered. and i don't really know
much about file damage..if there would be a difference between playing with
a font, of all things, when damage happened, versus working with more
important data. also, something that i had never heard of is problems with
incompatible printer drivers, such as hp laserjet 5, which just happens to
be EXACTLY what we have and is mentioned in the recover section of the ebase
admin manual.

so, that answer that i think i have is that i should go back to a backup
made earlier today (HOPEFULLY!), which is in the back office, and i don't
think i've ever seen or touched before because our exec director has been in
charge of that... what do you think?
if anyone thinks it's ok to use this recovered version let me know.

as other people on this list, let me mention my deep (cavernous)
appreciation for the technically proficient people helping us all out. thank
you!
