It is the in-house side of our backend processing of orders from the web. We
use a company www.multiactive.com to handle processing of orders from the
web. You can play with it on our web site, www.nynjtc.org, and click on
Hiker's Market Place to enter the store part of the site. Other than the
first page of that area, the web pages are generated by ecBuilder. They go
offsite to their machines when you choose to checkout. It is not the
greatest backend in the world but it is very cost effective. When they are
done with the processing they send us an encrypted email and we fill the
order and charge the card, using the ecOrder program which is part of the
package.

Our number of orders per day are not high enough to make using a fully
automatic backend cost effective. All the automatic backends I have looked
at have minimum charges which make them unattractive.

It is not the ideal system but it works reliably. All its data is in an
Access database so we could write additional reports. We did write a special
program to extract the email address of the person who ordered and we send
them an email when we ship their goods. That is all automatic but not
built-in. This is important for us as we frequently wind up adjusting the
bill because they have done wrong things with taxes, etc. This is less of a
problem now that we are based in NJ instead of NY where the sales tax cannot
even be done correctly with the zipcode. In NY there are zipcodes, parts of
which, pay different rates. Just this problem kept us from using almost all
the cheap store backends.
