Sure looks like your volunteer did some "extra" ill advised work. The right
drill on modifying layouts is only allow experienced people to do it and
they should do a backup before starting. Then you can get back without
having to figure out what happened to data as well. It is also possible that
the system crashed while the volunteer was doing the report (you don't say
if they were running a report or creating a new report). If the system
crashed it can damage layouts. Take option 1 below in this case.

You have two obvious choices:
1) go back to your backup
2) try to patch the layout back to working again.

For 2, get into layout mode and see if all the required layouts are present.
It may be that just the reference to the layout got munged. If all are
present try to fix the button definition that points to the wrong layout.

If this description is not sufficient, you probably don't know enough about
layouts to fix the problem. Go to your backup.
