Dave Shaw recently wrote up a FAQ that explains the three major payment
categories used in ebase, and which might shed some light on how to search
for renewals vs. straight donations, etc. The FAQ is posted on the ebase
website - I've appended the text below.

This answer addresses two questions that arise on the ebase support list:

How can I mark payments as something other than Dues, Contribution, and
Event\Purchase?

When I click the Payments tab on the home screen I see all the payments
related to a record, but they don't all show up on the View Payments screen,
and don't get included in the summaries at the bottom of the Home screen.
Why not?

------------------

ebase 1.xxx sorts payments into three major categories, determined by the
value of the Payment For field on the Payment Entry screen. It is best to
use only the three recognized categories in the Payment For field: Dues,
Contribution, and Event\Purchase. Depending on the Payment For field, a
payment gets posted in one of the three corresponding columns on the View
Payments screen, and other functions get triggered.

Dues payments show up in the Dues column, and an expiration date for the
membership gets calculated. Member Status gets updated, as well as other
summary fields such as Member level, Total Gifts, Largest $, YTD $, and
LastYr $.

Contribution payments are not assigned an expiration date. The payment is
included in the Contributions column, and the Donor Date is updated to be
the date of the latest payment. The payment is included in summaries of
donations such as Total Gifts, Largest $, YTD $, and LastYr $.

Payments coded as Event\Purchase (note that's a backslash) show up in the
Event\Purchase column and are included the total $ summaries such as $YTD.
Since these payments result from a purchase rather than a donation, they don
't show up in the summaries such as Total Gifts.

Payments coded with anything other than these three values don't show up in
any of the columns on the View Payments screen, and don't get included in
the appropriate summary fields. (They do show up under the Payment tab,
however, since this screen doesn't sort by the Payment For value.)

If you need to further distinguish the purpose of a payment, you can use the
pay memo to mark the purpose of a payment, much like you make a note at the
bottom of a check. For an event or purchase, you can also use the event and
item fields to describe the purpose of the payment.

Hope this helps!
