Title: Re: [support] Re: Automatic insetion of City
Ok, I'm new to all of this....the block I'm trying to switch indicates carrots (>>) before the name.  Does this indicate a merge field, as you suggested?

If so, what is an arrow tool?  I was using a combination of the mouse (double click) and shift key...

I'll try rearranging also, so that the city and state are separate (so WA turns to be WA and not Wa)....

but do tell me about the arrow tool, since there may be some instances where I want to use merge fields....

Thanks!!

Thanks for the info...I tried it with our mailing label option, and while it is easy to switch from upper to title case, it doesn't seem to work.  When I go back to browse mode, the cities are still showing up in upper case only.

I'm a little puzzled. You might have to be more specific about what you do to switch from upper case to title case. Here's one guess. Working with merge fields, you need to use the arrow tool to select the entire title block, then format the text to upper case or title case. I note that this might cause unintended effects such as causing the state to appear as Wa rather than WA. You might need to re-arrange the address to have the city as a separate text block to make that work.

If this doesn't do what you expect, be very specific about what you do to format the text so we can figure out what is happening.

suggestions?

Thanks!!

yes, it is in (I believe...and again, caveat is that I'm brand new to ebase) zip_fp5 file.  You can open this file up and edit away (by adding a new record).

Close - it's actually zip_.103 (or .102, if you're using that version).
One warning tho....we're dealing with the fact that our zip file is over 7,000 records, and all the cities are set up in upper case, as what the post office often wants.  However, in doing solicitation letters, I really hate the fact that the address block comes out all in upper case on the letter.  Likewise, while I understand that is how the post office prefers on the envelope, I think the letter and envelope give a more personal touch with the upper and lower case....doesn't look as direct mailey as all upper case.  I'd rather pay the extra cost (if there is one!) since I think you'll get a better response the more the piece looks personal.

So, I am now having quite a challenge in dealing with this...to update the entire database to convert from all upper case to upper and lower (and change the zip file as well), or whether there is a way to access a different field with the upper and lower case used.

FileMaker can impose case on the contents of a field with formatting commands. So, if your zip file contains cities in upper case (as it would if you purchased a zip code file), you can format the city fields in a particular location (on your envelopes and letters, for example) by selecting  the field and using text format commands to specify Title Case. On the other hand, if your zip file contains city names in title case, you can format them in Upper Case to get the lowest bulk mail rate.

So, before you start entering a ton of zip codes with city names, think through carefully how you want everything to look...from labels to letters etc....

I was told that when typing in some zip codes, the city field would
automatically fill in.  Can I edit this field to add zip codes that we sue
often?  Thanks!  Kris
