Rachel,
I've been distributing the following when I do ebase workshops. This is
less 'how to find data' stuff and more about some general thoughts on
careful ebase use. If it's useful, feel free to use any/all.

Some ebase musts...
1. Use ebase buttons (not FileMaker menus/buttons) whenever possible to do
your task (e.g. quit ebase, add a name, etc.). Failing to do this could
result in database corruption. Usually, there is no way to 'fix' a corrupt
database except by reverting to use of your most recent backup.
2. Update find fields regularly (go to the admin screen to do this). You
should especially be sure to do this before querying/finding any date or
payment related data.
3. Back up ebase each day that you add or edit data. Use a naming system
for your backups that indicates the date of each. Take your backup copies
off-site regularly to protect your valuable data. Keep at least several
months of archived backups. Your backups must be zipped or otherwise
compressed if kept on the same computer/network with your live
implementation of ebase.
4. Remember that ebase saves changes automatically and permanently. There
is no 'save' button and there is no 'undo' button. This is why backups are
so important.
5. Use the lowest user level possible for the task you are doing. If in
doubt, log in as 'user' -- if that doesn't work, then quit and log in again
as 'admin'. Use the 'master' level only when really necessary.
6. Never have more than one installation of ebase on a computer (or
network) at one time. Ebase & FileMaker can get confused, and hopelessly
scramble your work. To keep things safe, any extra copies of your ebase
data lying around must be zipped or similarly compressed.

Subject: [support] training other staff on ebase
Hi all. I am going to sit down with some new coworkers in a week or so
and do a brief ebase lesson, and I wanted to see if anybody had any
tips/ideas/warnings. These folks do not need to know too much about the
ins and outs of ebase, they just need to know how to open it properly,
how to do some of the more complex finds, etc. Basically I need them to
be able to get some basic information out of the database w/out needing
too much help or messing anything up. :) Just wanted to see if anybody
has "must teach"es for a brief lesson like this, in case I have
overlooked something.
Thanks a bunch,
Rachel
