ebase is bright enough to parse out the area code, but doesn't handle 
the extension well. You should run through your list and pull the 
extension numbers into a separate column. There are text functions in 
excel that can extract the extension. This will work more or less 
well depending on how consistently the extension is presented. If you 
have a mix of 2-, 3-, and 4-digit extensions, and the designator is 
sometimes x, sometimes ext, it will be tough. If there are few of 
them, it's probably easiest to pull them off by hand.

Then import the area code/phone number into the phone number field, 
and ebase will pull  off the area code and put it into the area code 
field as part of the import process
