That should work ok as long as other machines do not access the disks that the data is on. Very hard to control that so you could wind up with a client seeing some files via the server and others via the access - bummer. It will almost certainly result in poorer performance. You should not have anyone using the machine that is serving the files so you have effectively dedicated two machines to being servers. You either have to start it manually on the server or use a scheduler. You will be on the server stopping and starting to do backups anyway so it is not clear that a scheduler is much help. Also you need to open all the files, not just the ones ebase opens so you need a preebase file that scripts starting ebase and then opens the rest of the files in multiuser mode. As I have said before, FMP Server is the preferred solution and is likely to be cheaper in the long run even though it is a big initial expense.
