 From your note, it sounds as if you are typing a letter somewhere 
then attempting to choose a layout to use. It's not clear to me where 
you are typing the letter. I'm going to have to guess a little.

What needs to happen for this to work is to open ebase using 
FileMaker and the master level password, go to layout, select the 
letter layout, and modify this letter using FileMaker's layout tools 
to read the way you want. There are more details in the FileMaker 
user manual on working with layouts.

If you are using the runtime application rather than the full version 
of FileMaker, this won't be possible. In that case, you'll need to 
export the data you want to include, such as names and addresses, and 
compose a merge letter in your word processor.
