This problem got resolved today, by configuring the router to filter
UDP traffic on port 5003. This is a pretty obscure problem - I am
aware of many users with DSL connections that have no trouble
connecting without extraordinary methods. But it's one to file away
to remember when it does arise. One person who posted to the
Filemaker newsgroup solved the problem by upgrading to version 5.5,
so it's possible the fix will need to be reversed after upgrading.

For information,
Windows system, DSL connection through a Netgear router. FileMaker 5.0.
