This may be a good time to share a little caveat. I'm sure many groups here
are small enough that one person wears many hats. Even then, when possible,
it's good to keep responsibilities separate and have a clear system of
accountability. A group that I work with was burned badly for being lax with
this. Their full-time bookkeeper was a dear and trusted long-time friend. It
was difficult for everyone when they had to send him to jail for the tens of
thousands he had taken from the accounts over the years. He had covered his
tracks very well.

Perhaps worse was the credibility hit that resonated through the community
of trusting contributors. And the personal embarrassment endured by the
treasurer, the executive director and the board that it had happened on
their watch. It took years for the staff to recover their sense of humor.
Everyone was harmed and so was the cause. In the nonprofit arena, we tend to
trust one another without question. Generally, this is a good thing but
violations of that trust can hit hard. Don't let it happen. Good accounting
practices can prevent this from ever being a problem.
