Email and Ebase are awesome. mac or pc, i use both.
It takes 30 minutes to setup and test but then
it saves us so much cash and outreach time.
Note that Homail and yahoo don't accept our mass email broadcasts if we do
a big BCC. Those messages are put out of sight in the bulk or junk mail
folder or deleted by spam guards. So you must use ebase/eudora to send
stuff in custom mail merge format these days.
Easy Steps to setup, same on mac and pc.
0) Install and maintain virus protection on the comptuer
that will act as your email broacaster
1) download eudora light 3 ( i like better than 5 )

2) install eudora light or eudora 5
3) go to controlpanels, internet, set eudora as email app
you might need internet config extension on OS7
4) Start ebase
5) Start Eudora-Light
Setup eudora preferences, options
setup pop and smtp server names
remove checkbox on IMMEDIATE SEND
send a test email to yourself
check mail
on windows turn on MAPI in eudora prefs
keep eudora open, hidden or minimized
6) in ebase do a find on 5-10 people
select output, email
click next, next,
create text from scratch
"Dear <<FIRST NAME 1>>, testing, testing"
I always used custom
I never use batch
hit send
7) bingo, now task switch to eudora
you should see 5-10 email messages queued up ready to go
connect via modem if needed,
select file check mail to send them out
disconnect from internet

---Your choice of an email companion application is a huge part of success
when sending a lot of email with ebase.
--- do not use outlook, outlook express or entorage, details on that below.
--- My personal feelings is that Eudora is the best companion for ebase.
The beauty of EudoraLight3 and Eudora5 is that it is cross platform, never
crashes, takes a tiny bit of memory and has almost zero risk of giving you
or spreading a virus. Eudora does not send out email with text formatting
junk. Look at all the email you get with crap like &nnbsb and it""""s an
apostrophie.
---note, if you have not added records properly the mail merge custom email
WILL NOT WORK. you have to select from the script menu the option to
"CREATE RELATED RECORDS" also, if you want to send an attachment named
ourflyer.pdf you must change it from attach.me by opening FM Pro then
ebase.102 and in names.102 edit the script called "200b Send Mail".
--- note. It helps to send a yearly confirmation to users of their data.
Dear so and so, here is what we have listed for your phone and address
etc... please reply with corrections.
--- note, if you are doing outreach and you want to send an email that will
be forwarded (chain email) then draft the text copy in word in a font like
courier new. set the margin to 40 chars wide. select all, set 12pt font,
Turn on vewining of paragraph marks and add a hard return to each line.
This will create a tall narrow column of text that can be forwarded with
very few text issues. select all, cut, paste special , unformatted text,
to remove any text garbaage. then paste your message into ebase.

--note, once eudora is setup and in the background you can be in the ebase
home screen and hit the little action spot next to the email field and it
will compose a new email to that person automatically.
---300 words why you should avoid Microsoft and email: Outlook sends out
email that looks good only to other outlook users. And if your email is
forwarded once it looks like a bunch of text garbage. Use Microsoft email
tools if you are a fool and you want to send email that is infected and
full of text formatting issues. In other words DO NOT USE: outlook,
outlook express or entogarbage. Outook sucked so much they tried to fool
people by chaning the name to entorage. It is bad code and will stay that
way. I have a 4 year CS degree, worked at Compaq and Macromedia for 6
years and left to teach and support computers for 1300 beginner users in a
public inner city school. If you don't take my advice on my IT
background and 13 years of using and supporting email for thousands of
humans nothing will help you. Nothing I can say will sway a fool. Just
search the internet on virus and outlook and get a clue. A true joke is
this. What is the VTP protocol? Answer: outlook, VTP = Virus Transport
Protocol. Being at IT manager is like being a plumber in a city of
clogged toilets. All my friends call me with problems and the most common
are email issues caused by Microsoft. But now most friends use yahoo or
eudora.
