The payment report includes all the payments in the found set when you run the report. If those payments were made by several people it will print the individual payments and a total for each person. It sounds to me as if you just don't have the right set of payments. From the view payments screen, or the payment entry screen click the find button, enter the criteria that will give you the payments you want (for example today's date in the post date field) and hit the enter key to perform the search.
