IF:
A- you or someone you know and trust has any comfort level messing around with computers, especially networking,
AND
B- you are on ethernet
I would recommend the following:
1- get an old PC, any Pentium or better with more than 12mb of RAM
2- add two network cards
3- go to <http://leaf.sourceforge.net/>
4- Chose from the list of firewalls:
I use Dachstein.
5- Follow the directions, and ask for help on the very active mailing list.
ALSO: Only allow secure "SSH" access from outside the network, not telnet, Timbuktu, ftp, or whatever.
What i gained from "Dachstein" was
~ firewall protection
~ NAT (makes all your computers look like one from outside)
~ more
...ALL ON AN OLD 486! (yeah, you could use one also.)
I have a static IP address and use DSL. I am hosting
<http://catweb.org>
which is a BETA version of our site (blush). the mail server goes up next week.
My next project is a firewall for my DSL connection at home, which has non-static (dynamic.DHCP) IP from Verizon.
