I'd also just add that if you're using a backup program like Retrospect
to do comprehensive network-wide backups, all of the zipping and
archiving of old copies is taken care of automatically.

Of course, Retrospect does take some expertise to setup and use
correctly.  But the benefits of having really good backups are, IMHO,
worth it.
