I didn't mean to imply that deleting records using FileMaker commands 
was the easy way. Because the ebase files are related, it's really 
important to use the ebase procedures, NOT the Filemaker commands.

There are different installers for OS X, which installs a runtime 
application suitable for that operating system. I think that 
installer was posted later than the one for OS 9. Try running ebase 
in Classic and see if the delete works on OS 9.
