We sell books, maps, memberships and take contributions from our web site.
We use a third party to do the actual SSL part of the transactions.
Certificates for your own server are expensive and not worth it unless you
have a large enough volume. Using a third party reduces the problem to one
of getting the information from the third party back to your office
securely. There are two general schemes to do this. Some have a web page
that you access via a password that is SSL protected. You then either print
or cut/paste from the web pages to your machine, or sometimes download
files. Others send you an encrypted email for each transaction. You need an
email certificate for this to work but they are something like $15 a year so
they are not a problem. We use one that uses the latter.

Once you have the transaction, you need to interact with a credit card
processor to get the charge credited to your account. Some third parties
will do automatic credit card processing automatically for you at an
additional cost, typically 2% (added to about 2% charge to the credit card
company). I don't recommend the automatic process if you selling goods as it
is not tied to your inventory and you may not be able to fill the order in a
timely fashion.

To make this relevant to ebase, either of these approaches still leaves you
with the manual chore of adding the relevant information to ebase (and
probably your accounting program).
