I'm in the same boat, only I'm connected to the phone through USB, using the directions here:
http://www.openmoko.org/wiki/Getting_Started_with_your_Neo_FreeRunner I can ssh into the phone, but I get the same thing if I run opkg update. So the setup for me is: phone->usb->laptop->wireless->router Should I try to configure the phone for wireless and then try updating? Someone suggested pinging www.openmoko.com or the like.
