just had a look at
http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/panel-plugins/xfce4-battery-plugin
and it states that the battery plugin is able to read apm ...
though, it does not provide any useful information but always 0% and even 
calling
apm
from the shell does not return anything.
so, what is it with apm on the freerunner with debian? in 2007.2 calling "apm" 
returns sensible informations.

additionally is noted that there's a process [kapm] and starting apmd 
interferes with power management (sending to sleep seems to work only when apmd 
is killed again).
the kernel i use is from last weekend with no updates since.

so, how does apm work in this debian installation and how to make apm aware 
programs work?
