It should get you location in approximately 40 seconds. You are using recent kernel, so this http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/GPS_Problems should not be a problem.
I would recommend to find a clear place without high buildings, stay still for a while (when you are moving it's hard to find a position for GPS) wait for about a minute and see what happens.
