I've managed to get my wlan card started automatically in pfsense
without having to fiddle with the WEP settings.
Turns out the problem was that I had filled in the 'station name' box on
the interface configuration page. Once that was blanked, the interface
was brought up correctly. Bit of a silly problem that one... is it
specific to the ath driver, or is it a more common issue?
If it is a more common issue, would it be worth submitting as a bug?
Things like that would benefit from a little warning, perhaps. Principle
of least astonishment, and all that.

Try using an ascii key instead of a hex one (sounds like you are using a hex key). A hex
key needs a "0x" in front to be recognized correctly by the driver. However the
webgui of this version only allows a 10 char or 26 char key as hex and assigns this one
without the 0x. The new version will allow to set a correct wep-key and even will add the
0x if missing. There will also be a generator for wep-keys. Stay tuned, upgrade some
files manually or use ascii keys with this version. This worked for me.

Betreff: [pfSense Support] Wireless interface configuration issue
I'm probably missing something pretty obvious here, but I seem to be
having real problems getting pfsense to correctly configure my wlan card.
I'm running 0.80.4 on a soekris 4801, with a mini-pci wireless card
(ath0) configured as the OPT2 interface. I've configured the interface
to start in hostap mode, and I've set the SSID and WEP key. These
settings are definitely saved... I've checked the big XML settings file
you get from the backup mechanism. These wireless specific settings are
never actually used, though. Upon a reboot, the card is assigned the IP
address I want it to have, and brought up. Yet if I want it to actually
work in hostap mode, or use WEP in any way I need to invoke ifconfig to
do so.
I'm assuming I've made a pretty basic error here. Can anyone set me
straight?
Thanks in advance,
- Ruan
