I have a version installed under vmware gsx 3.2 as well and I notice the same thing.

Hi!
I did a new install, and this is what I obtain:

# df -h
Filesystem     Size    Used   Avail Capacity  Mounted on
/dev/ad0s1a    496M    437M     19M    96%    /
devfs          1.0K    1.0K      0B   100%    /dev
# du -h /rescue/
356M    /rescue/

The only think I could imagine is that this is not a "real" disk, but a vmware Virtual Machine.. Do you think this could be the reason?

Try a reinstall.   All of my boxes are ~3 megs.
