I tried adding

ChallengeResponseAuthentication no

to /etc/ssh/sshd_config in .89.2 as well, and it doesnt seem to make a difference.

the appropriate change to make in freebsd 5.3+ is:

 /etc/sshd/sshd_config:

# Change to no to disable PAM authentication
ChallengeResponseAuthentication no
