LAN activities, like SMB browsing, aren't affected by your firewall at
all (unless you're running two network segments and routing between them
with the firewall).
A 400 MHz is very quick, by firewall standards, if you aren't routing
between LAN's. I run my 6.0/512 cable modem primarily on a Soekris 4501
(486 133 MHz), with power to spare (m0n0wall 1.2, FreeBSD 4.11).
